June 2009 Hello Members of the Edward Jay Rykoskey Post #1, I recently received a box from your group that was full of all sorts of good snack and books. Wow! It was great. The stuff disappeared out of there so fast, you'd have thought the box was sent empty! It is wonderful to receive things from you guys; it helps us remember that folks back home haven't forgotten us and is a tangible way that you send a little piece of "home" out to us. We're located on a tiny firebase called Terin Kowt in the southern part of Afghanistan. Our little base is attached to a much larger one with a number of other coalition countries represented. I work at the hospital on the base, also called an FST, or Forward Surgical Team. We only have about 15 or so medical personnel here, made up of a combination of Navy and Air Force people. We don't have alot of options for what to do out here, either. For example, we only have a gym, dining facility, room to sleep in and where we work (for us, the hospital). There's no store (which saves us money), chapel, restaurant, movie theater or internet room. Just last week we got permanent postal clerks, which should expedite mail delivery, which up to this point, has been monthly at best. The weather here is relatively nice, I guess, (okay, it's hot). The dust doesn't provide much shade either. There is a constant din of power generators and/or helicopters taking off and landing to add to the ambiance. It is rarely ever quiet, here, but I guess you get used to it. As it turns out, I've been here since mid-December and expect to leave within only a week or so. Our main obstacle o is the timely arrival of our replacements. I won't be here to receive any more boxes. There will certainly be others to follow me at the same address (TK FST, APO AE 09355). I will ask my replacement to see if she minds if I forward her name and address to you, if you wanted to send anying else. Thanks again and please pass on our appreciation for your support. Take Care, Richard Moon |

early December 2009 Thank you guys so much for the package - everyone is enjoying all the snacks and goodies that you guys have sent and we all very much appreciate your support on what we are doing. I haven't really had a chance to pass out cards to all the people that are on our fob. I go out on missions outside the wire a lot so I set the stack of cards in the main lobby area around the mail room for people to grab. I noticed some other people had done the same. Its' been a little crazy over here lately with the the election of the new leader of the country coming in January and us wanting to withdrawal troops. The enemy is attacking because they know we are not going to be here for much longer (hopefully). I am still scheduled to come home next October however I don't get so lucky as some other divisions. But all and all I'm doing ok. My hearing has returned completely and I'm back to 100% again. Once again I thank you guys so much and I truly appreciate you sending all the goodies. I look forward to thanking you in person when i return home from iraq Sincerely Jeremy Jayne |
